This note outlines the evaluation criteria that will be used by Section 02 of the CoNRS, whether it sits as an evaluation and promotion body or as an eligibility jury for recruitment competitions. These criteria cannot, however, fully account for the diversity of existing situations, which plays an important role in the evaluation process. The variety of profiles and environments from which the candidates benefit will also be taken into account during the evaluation.
The evaluation is based first and foremost on the scientific contributions made by the participants. It then integrates the other dimensions of the research activity: dissemination of knowledge, valorization and transfer, leadership and management responsibilities, etc. Arguments concerning thematic balance may also be taken into consideration.
These criteria are open, non-exclusive, non-hierarchical and not strictly cumulative.
In general, the evaluation will be qualitative rather than quantitative (see the DORA San Francisco agreements signed by CNRS). The new format of the application for promotion proposes, for example, to highlight 10 scientific productions rather than an exhaustive list. In any case, the primary criterion is the quality of the scientific contributions. In the case of a promotion, priority will be given to contributions since the last promotion.
1 Evaluation of laboratories
- Scientific activity of the laboratory
- Quality of scientific production, national and international influence of the laboratory
- Interest and originality of the themes studied, their scientific impacts
- Coherence of scientific objectives, complementarity of themes
- Participation in programs, projects or contracts
- Scientific animation (seminars, working groups, )
- Openness of the laboratory
- Involvement in training, follow-up of trained PhDs
- Quality of external collaborations and invitations
- Synergies generated by the laboratory
- Dynamism of the laboratory
- Involvement in teaching
- Dissemination of scientific culture
- Valorization actions
- Organization and internal functioning
- Strategy of the unit and capacity to implement it
- Management of scientific staff, technical and administrative staff
- Use of laboratory resources and equipment
- Interest and originality of the themes studied, their scientific impact
- Functioning of the internal bodies
- Management capacities of the directorate
2 Recruitment of young researchers (Chargé de Recherche Classe Normale CRCN)
- Previous research work (quality and mastery by the candidate)
- Autonomy and scientific maturity
- Quality of the research project
- Scientific creativity and risk-taking
- Research experience (collaborations, post-doc, )
- Mobility
- International visibility In the case of a targeted profile, adequacy to the posted profile
The essential point at this level of recruitment concerns the evaluation of the scientific potential of the candidates which will be done by taking into account their scientific activity (related to their number of years of professional activities), the originality and the difficulty of the research undertaken and the risk-taking carried out. The section will consider the recruitment of research fellows from the first years after the thesis and possibly more important courses. The scientific quality of the candidates is in all circumstances the first criterion of evaluation.
3 Senior researchers: promotion to Senior Research Fellow (Chargé de Recherche Hors Classe CRHC)
The criteria must allow for the evaluation, in the first place, of the interest and originality of the research subjects as well as the creativity and experience of the researchers. They must also take into account other aspects of the researcher’s profession.
- Quality of scientific production
- Scientific risk-taking
- Interest of the scientific project
- Teaching and dissemination of scientific culture
- Supervision of doctoral students and young researchers
- Collective responsibilities
- Animation and organization of research
- Participation in programs, projects or contracts
- Actions of valorization
4 Confirmed researchers: DR2 competition, DR1 and DRCE promotions
The criteria must allow for the evaluation of the interest and originality of the research topics as well as the creativity of the researchers and their scientific impact within the national and international community.
- They must also take into account all aspects of the job of Research Director.
- Quality of scientific production.
- International recognition
- Interest of the scientific project
- Scientific risk-taking
- Teaching and dissemination of scientific culture
- Supervision of doctoral students and young researchers
- Collective responsibilities
- Animation and organization of research
- Participation in programs, projects or contracts
- Promotional activities
- Ability to direct research programs
- Habilitation to direct research
5 Wave and mid-wave examination of researchers.
The same criteria as for the recruitment of a CR or a DR will be applied, taking into account seniority and adding the integration of the researcher’s activities in the laboratory where he/she carries out his/her research.
